The Knox Club Sports Fishing Club Versus BMYS Port Welshpool was run over the weekend of 6th and 7th of February. We compete for the “LAGA” cup which is a play on the BMYS GALA fishing day.
This year BMYS was represented by a strong contingent of 12 boats and 27 entrants. KCSFC also had the regulars attend it was great to catch up with them again.
A number of BMYS members and guests arrived early on Thursday and Friday and were greeted by great weather and some very cooperative whiting, flathead and squid.
The forecast for the competition on Saturday wasn’t ideal but a number of boats managed to sneak offshore early and make the most of the opportunity. A number of smaller gummy sharks were caught out around the “oval “mark and John Roberts also snagged a lovely Flathead of just on 3kg.
Brendan Hocking and Toni Hawkens certainly put their magnificent new boat “Always Offshore” to great use punching out past Refuge Cove to land a magnificent Tuna and a lovely Gummy. Check the boat out if you get a chance.
Saturday also fished well inside with many crews recording bag limits of whiting, some nice squid and also a number of terrific flathead.
The highlight of the trip is definitely the Saturday night BBQ at the Long Jetty Caravan Park were we all enjoy a good dinner and catch up with our mates from Knox. A big thank you to Brendan and Toni for sharing some of the freshly caught Sashimi Blue fin.
With Sunday having being issued a strong wind warning the comp was called off and Graeme from Knox awarded the LAGA cup to BMYS.
If you haven’t experienced Port Welshpool before I strongly suggest you give it a try. It has remarkable fishing options and not too far from Melbourne.
