There were 17 boats from BMYS, 3 boats from Knox Club Sports Fishing Club and Peter “Fergy” Ferguson who made the trip to Welshpool. It was encouraging to see several new faces from BMYS and hopefully they will be back next year.
Once again, we had 3 perfect days for fishing with Thursday, Friday and Saturday perfect for heading offshore or fishing in the productive waters of Corner Inlet. The variety of fish on offer is quite unbelievable ang good sized with some of the species caught including Snapper, Flathead, Whiting, Gummy Shark, Squid, Kingfish, Yakkas, Salmon, Blue Throat Wrasse and a variety of sharks.
Whilst the whiting were a bit on the quiet side most members managed a good feed. Some terrific flathead were boated over the weekend with fish over 50cm and even bigger not uncommon.
Belly has become the gummy king over the last few years. I think 3 fish on or just over 30kg in the last 2 years? He managed a good 165 cm gummy on Friday which took out the largest gummy for the weekend.
A special mention should go to Peter Ferguson. Fergie spent the weekend fishing with the boys from Knox and I was lucky enough to fish on his boat with Hooch on Saturday. Peter took us to White Rock before sunrise and although we didn’t get a Kingfish I learnt enough to be confident that I am doing all the right things, giving me the best chance of catching a Kingie next time I get out there.
Peter then put us on the gummies with Hooch getting a fish around 5kg and myself a 16kg model. I believe after observing Fergie sound and prepare for gummies I will genuinely catch more fish. Peter landed multiple big gummies each day.
To be clear Fergy came along for the weekend without any endorsements or ask from BMYS. He came and helped and shared his knowledge purely for his love of fishing. Thanks so much, mate, you are always welcome at our club.
Thanks to everyone who made the effort and hopefully see you all there next year.
